RHRA Appointments New Complaints Review Officer (March 13, 2017):
On behalf of the RHRA Board of Directors, John J. Rossiter, Chair, is pleased to announce the appointment of Elyse Sunshine as its Complaints Review Officer (CRO), for a three-year term effective February 25, 2017. Ms. Sunshine brings a range of skills and experience that will assist the RHRA in fulfilling its mandate supporting both consumer protection and choice through transparency.
Ms. Sunshine is a lawyer and partner of Rosen Sunshine LLP specializing in health law. She is active in the health community and has served as a member of the Research Ethics Board at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab and is a founding Board member of the David Cornfield Melanoma Fund. Ms. Sunshine is also a member of the Medico-Legal Society, the Ontario Bar Association, and the Advocate’s Society. She was named to Best Lawyers Canada for Health Care Law for 2015 and 2016.
The CRO is responsible for reviewing the Registrar’s actions (under certain conditions) with respect to complaints relating to alleged contraventions of the Act. Where the Registrar has considered a complaint and made a decision to take no further action, the complainant has a right to request a review by the CRO. The CRO reviews the reasonableness of the Registrar’s consideration and decision to take no further action in respect of the complaint. The CRO may refer the complaint back to the Registrar with a recommendation for further action.
