Elyse Sunshine Comments on Research Showing Docs at Risk from Narcotic Seeking Patients

A recent article in the StarPhoenix reported on new research which shows that physicians are experiencing abuse from patients who are seeking narcotics and other controlled drugs. In a follow up article, Elyse Sunshine commented that it is an unfortunate reality that physicians may experience actual abuse by patients seeking drugs but may also experience more subtle means  such as pressure or threats to report to the College. As a result, physicians need to implement protective measures into their practice, like narcotic contracts, to minimize these risks. In addition, clearly outlining terms as to when and in what manner narcotics will be prescribed also minimizes the risk of undesirable behaviour from drug seeking patients. And of course, maintaining complete and accurate records will assist the physician, should there be an issue.
