New legislation in Quebec that will permit a physician to administer medication to assist in ending a terminal patient's life will not, as some people fear, open the floodgates for assisted suicide for Ontario patients but will certainly enhance the existing dialogue around end of life care. In an interview, Elyse Sunshine notes that the Quebec law is only applicable to Quebec residents and while Ontario doctors may face questions about whether it is an option for their patients, the reality is that the Quebec law does not change the laws and policies in Ontario. Facing potential challenge by the Federal government for being at odds with the Criminal Code of Canada, this Quebec legislation will certainly be at the forefront of end of life discussions.
